The town has long been known for its most famous historical resident, Dr. Crawford Long. Dr. Long is known as the father of anesthesia. In 1842, Dr. Long performed surgery to remove a tumor using inhaled sulfuric ether. There is a museum in Jefferson dedicated to Dr. Long and his scientific discoveries.
