The Healing Legacy of Gus: How Two Therapy Dogs Keep His Spirit Alive

As Jake and Nellie, two certified therapy dogs, step into Northeast Georgia Medical Center, something magical happens. Eyes brighten, shoulders relax, and for a brief moment, burdens feel a little lighter.

Twice a week, these golden-hearted retrievers arrive like rays of sunshine, greeted with hugs, kisses, and eager hands reaching for a comforting touch.

Wednesdays belong to Jake, a laid-back yet joyful 10-year-old retriever whose favorite spot is the foyer of the rotunda, where he welcomes visitors with soft eyes and a sweet, whiney “hello.” His gentle vocalizations seem to say, “Come on in! I’m so happy to see you!” A greeting that never fails to bring a smile.

Thursdays are for Nellie, a bright and affectionate 22-month-old retriever with a boundless love for spreading cheer. Thanksgiving Day marked her first official therapy visit, and ever since, she has embraced her role wholeheartedly. Nellie thrives in the quieter, one-on-one moments, often guiding Nancy, her devoted handler, straight to where comfort is needed most. Whether it’s curling up beside a patient in bed, resting her head in someone’s hands, or offering her warmth to a weary soul, Nellie seems to have an innate ability to find hearts needing healing.

Word travels fast when Jake or Nellie arrive. “JAKE IS IN THE HOUSE!” or “NELLIE IS IN THE HOUSE!” echoes through the hospital halls, followed by texts and calls from nurses and doctors requesting a visit for a patient who could use an extra dose of love that day. It’s not uncommon to see a stressed ER nurse or an exhausted doctor sink to the floor, letting Jake or Nellie press against them for a moment of quiet solace- just enough to remind them that, even on the hardest days, there is still joy to be found.

Wednesdays and Thursdays belong to these Happy Makers-a term lovingly coined by Nancy Hammond, their person. But their work is more than just visits; it’s a continuation of a legacy.

That legacy began with Gus.

Gus, the wise and gentle Golden Retriever who first graced the halls of NEGMC, set the standard for what a therapy dog could be. With his love of dressing up, his undeniable charm, and his ability to make anyone feel seen and loved, Gus was more than just a therapy dog- he was a healer. Until his passing in 2022, he lifted countless spirits, leaving paw prints not only on the hospital floors but on the hearts of those he met.

Now, Jake and Nellie follow in his footsteps, proving that love, kindness, and the simple joy of a wagging tail have the power to transform even the heaviest of days.
