History

Founded in 1872 after a railroad was built connecting Charlotte, NC, to Atlanta, GA, Burford holds a rich history that continues to shape its vibrant community today. During the post-Civil War reconstruction period, stockholders Thomas Garner and Larkin Smith of the Richmond and Danville Railroad System purchased land around the railroad’s right of way and began construction of the city of Buford. The city then expanded rapidly after its initial completion in 1871. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Buford gained renown as a major hub for leather production, establishing itself as a prominent center in the leather industry and earning the moniker “The Leather City.” The city has since evolved into a thriving community while preserving its small-town charm. Be sure to visit the Buford History Museum to learn more about the city’s past and its impact on the region.
