Tins and Tassels Consignment & Gifts brings an unexpected shopping experience to Braselton’s downtown
On a quaint one-way street in the heart of historic Braselton, Ga is the treasure trove known as Tin and Tassels. The building, charming but otherwise nondescript on the exterior, is overflowing with rustic elegance, opulent accoutrements, trims, trappings and haberdashery on the interior. What was once a barn on the Braselton family farm is now a thriving upscale consignment and gift boutique.
Caryn McGarity is one of the owners of the shop. With her beautiful long auburn hair, Caryn could easily put one in mind of the Little Mermaid with her cavern of trinkets, whoseits and whatsits. (Although, Tins and Tassels wares are more useful than Ariel’s 20 thingabobs).
Upon entering, you’ll descend a staircase adorned with art, objects and oddities. A soaring ceiling and clever placement of larger furnishings keep the shop feeling open and airy. It is, in fact, packed with everything from a mahogany desk with matching chair to handmade wooden utensils perfect for gift-giving. The idea for the boutique came simply enough. Caryn and her partner, Kathy Pugh, were looking for somewhere to consign their own belongings. The chatter around the idea spread a bit and the city offered the unique and historic space. Caryn and Kathy snapped it up.
As metropolitan as Braselton has become, Caryn and Kathy knew that offering a selection of quality, unique gift items would be helpful to local residents. While the Mall of Georgia is conveniently nearby, mall traffic is never very convenient. Tins and Tassels offers an array of handmade soaps, pet products, baby gifts and wine flasks.
“I wanted to carry products that I use and enjoy,” explained Caryn. The line of baby gifts comes from Bunnies by the Bay, a family owned company that started making stuffed animals as a means of dealing with the loss of their patriarch. The pet products are all natural and cleverly packaged. Many of the other new items are handmade by local or nearby artisans.
The Braselton area, with the development of Chateau Elan, Reunion and other high-end communities, has a large proportion of luxury and executive homes. Since it’s customary for executives to relocate, shops like Tin and Tassels find themselves with some really fantastic, one-of-a-kind pieces.
“Often, we get in custom pieces,” Caryn explains. She told us, sometimes people move here to find the sofa from their previous home doesn’t fit their space and sometimes, people consign pieces they don’t want to move with them if they are leaving the area.
Currently, at Tins and Tassels there’s a giant red ottoman, a gorgeous buffet, a giant blue willow type vase, a multitude of stunning rugs, lamps, platters, pitchers, china and countless other carefully curated items.
